Dnipropetrovsk is located southeast of Ukraine's capital Kiev on the Dnieper River, in the south-central part of the country. The city is the regional and administrative centre of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
Dnipropetrovsk became a city in 1787, and had its current name in 1926. The area is 405 km2. The population is about 996 thousand people.
A vital industrial centre of Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk was one of the key centres of the nuclear, arms, and space industries. Steel and iron industry, mechanical engineering are the most developed spheres of manufacture. The city is also a rail and auto transport node.
